Basics[]

The basic fundamentals of this mode are the same as Challenge Mode. You must roll the monkeys to the goal without letting them fall off or run out of time. However, many aspects are quite different:

  • When beginning a world, any one stage from a set of ten (twenty in Super Monkey Ball Deluxe) can be picked. Unlike in Challenge Mode, there is no set order.
  • Stages cannot be replayed once they have been completed once.
  • There are no lives. If the monkey falls out or if the timer reaches 0, the player is asked if they want to retry the level, which they may do as much as they like.
  • Collecting bananas does nothing more than add points, and count towards a cumulative banana count, and bananas collected on a stage are lost upon failing a level.
  • Only one player is allowed.
  • The player selects from one of three save files to start, and can save their progress after exiting a stage.
  • Completing ten stages triggers a cutscene and changes the world.
  • Only AiAi can be played.
  • Play time and total score are saved with progress and are viewable on the save file selection screen.

Changes in Banana Mania[]

Several changes and new feature additions were made in Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania.

  • There is only one save file per game file.
  • Any monkey or other available character can be used.
  • Levels can be replayed after being cleared.
  • Earlier worlds can be accessed after clearing a world.
  • Every level has a number of missions that can be completed, awarding Banana Points that can be spent in the Point Shop.
  • The player's best time for completing each level is recorded next to each level on the level select.
  • There is no cumulative banana count, score, or play time, although the current bananas collected in individual levels is noted, along with the current number of Banana Points
  • There is no longer a difficulty rating for levels
  • The number of friend and worldwide clears for the version of the game being played are listed for each world

Trivia[]

  • In Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania's Story Mode, YanYan and Doctor have been added in the original plot of Super Monkey Ball 2's Story Mode, but are only shown in the prologue and the epilogue.
  • In Super Monkey Ball 2's Story Mode, the first eight colors of the balls in which the stages appear are all used for the eight racers in Monkey Race 2, which are red, blue, yellow, green, aqua, hot pink, black, and white. It is just the ninth and tenth colors that are not used in Monkey Race 2, which are amethyst and chartreuse. If Monkey Race 2 had had ten players, amethyst and chartreuse most likely would have been used for players 9 and 10.
  • In Super Monkey Ball 2, the banana counter caps out at 999 bananas. Assuming the player collects every single banana, this will happen on world 6. However, it isn't actually possible to collect every single banana.
